Pause and Remember

Let us take a moment and pause. It's time to remember and remind why we are doing this.

If you haven't yet read the Kimkins Survivors blog, please do so! THAT is the reason we are here. That is the reason for this blog and other similar blogs.

Real people are being hurt.

Real children are seeing their mothers suffer.

Real women are going to the emergency room with heart palpitations and other acute health issues.

Real people are losing weight on a starvation diet and are unaware of the long term risks to their health.

People are losing their hair.

People are destroying their metabolism.

People are being misled into thinking that Kimkins is safe.

A recent blog comment made a very important point. SURE you will lose weight eating 500 calories a day (or 710, or 800). SURE some people haven't had any health problems. Does that mean it's safe? Some people have smoked cigarettes for decades and have no visible health issues. Does that mean smoking is safe? Of course not.

People shouldn't have to judge the odds on their health, as if spinning a roulette wheel hoping that they will be lucky and avoid damage.

You CAN lose weight safely. Kimkins is NOT the answer. Please step away from the roulette wheel. Gamble with lottery tickets, not your life.

Just so we can be clear. What do you recommend as minimum calorie requirements to be healthy and still lose weight? A lot of Kimkins members feel that eating a little more than RDA of protein, about 40 grams of healthy fats, and less than 20 carbs a day with a diet consisting of lean unprocessed meats, (poultry, seafood, extra lean beef, eggs) healthy low carb veggies, and plenty of low to no calorie beverages, can't be harmful, especially when combined with 30 minutes or so of cardio per day. Especially when they are eating that way and not getting hungry. What about the argument that people didn't always have easy access to as many calories as they do today, combined with the obesity epidemic in America? What about the Atkins argument that we need to unbalance our diet for a period of time to counteract the effects of diets that were tipped too far in the other direction for so long?

There are certainly members who take KK too far; many on the advice of Kimmer. But I am not talking about those. I am not talking about the ones who abuse laxatives, or fast, or any of that. I am referencing those that are eating and drinking as I described above, and ignoring any bad advice they may read in the forums. They may be getting only 700-1500 calories a day, but are not eating any junk. If they feel good, have no side effects, and are getting regular checkups with their doctors and are testing out healthy, what do you say to them. What do you say to the diabetics who are being taken off medication by their docs after months of eating this way? What do you say to folks who's blood pressure is improving by eating this way? What do you say to The morbidly obese that are losing pounds that would have shortened their lives? What about those that have been through weight loss surgery or have avoided surgery (recommended by their doctors) by eating this way? Is Kimkins, or Stillman, or Atkins '72 more dangerous than being cut open and hiving your insides re-routed and then existing on 500 calories a day with low carbs? Perhaps the WW front page should have read: "Safer than Gastric Bypass"... I dunno. That would be hard to argue with, I think.

I am not trying to start an argument. I just think it would be helpful to readers here to understand where you stand on that issue, disregarding the obvious: that Kimmer is a fraudulent, morally bankrupt, liar who often dispenses poor or dangerous advice.

I think it would be helpful and persuasive to see a post detailing your thoughts on that stuff. I think your best argument may be in the metabolism tack, but some members like Becky have tracked their metabolism while losing, and can refute that, and there is research to support that finding as well. But let's hear what you think. I love an open discussion of ideas.

My stand on the issue is very, very simple.

No one should be giving out dietary advice (especially to anyone with medical conditions such as Diabetes) without medical training.

There is a reason that dieticians, nutritionists, doctors, etc., go to medical school. There is also a reason that it is against the law to purport to be any of those vocations without the necessary training and licensing.

Why? Because it has clearly been shown that diets that restrict calories below basal metabolic needs are dangerous and need to be medically supervised.

If one person has been harmed by any of the Kimkins plans (even as written without all of the insane PBTP advice, then something must change.

More than one person HAS been harmed by the diet plans as written.

I will not state my "opinion" as to what healthy caloric levels are, or what level medications diabetics should be on, as I am not a medically trained professional.

Yes, many people give their advice over the LC forums about this and that, citing this study and that study, but they do not proclaim themselves an expert and charge money for that information. That is an entirely different can of worms.

I know you're not looking to start an argument and I'm not trying to give you one.. lol. But my own personal opinions on healthy dietary levels of fats, proteins, carbohydrates and calories is just that, my opinion.

That being said, at least, if I were to post about my opinions, I could back them up with actual medical studies and peer reviewed information, which, is saying more than Kimmer can.

Well said, me thinks.
So what if someone is having no problems or bad side effects, takes an exact accounting of their nutrient input and exercise output to their personal and well respected physician, gets the ok, and even suport, and agrees to regular monitoring? My opinion is that is ok. So if Kimkins followers all followed this advice, I sure some of their doctors would balk, but some would condone it. I wonder what the percentages would be. We will never know as long as most members keep relying on Kimmer as their personal diet and health guru. Some docs are very anti-low carb, (even Atkins) and some are very open to it, and have seen how well it can work. Interesting thougts we are exploring here. I hope this discussion draws in more readers and starts to open their minds.

thetruth, my main concern with the diet plans of Kimkins is that they were severe enough to warrant and necessitate medical oversight.

I do agree that there are times when it may be appropriate for someone to follow a diet plan similar to the ones Kimmer has "invented" / stolen.

As a poster on the ALC board recently said.. if you are morbidly obese to the point where losing weight is crucial to saving your life, then you are too overweight to just go randomly picking a weight loss plan from the internet without medical supervision.

Kimmer's claim that NOTHING is more dangerous than being overweight is untrue, in my opinion. Being obese is of course a danger, but there are worse things and sometimes, certain diet plans can exacerbate problems hiding just under the surface.

So, I wouldn't have a problem with the Kimkins Diet plans (as written) if someone's doctor recommended it for them as a live saving effort and closely monitored their progress.

I do have HUGE issues with it being bandied about online as if it's the savior for all obesity by someone with absolutely no credentials.

I hope that makes sense. I've just spent a few hours in the sun and my eyes haven't adjusted to the darkness inside yet, LOL (not really sure what I typed..... lol)

I agree with you, but putting this argument out there is a good thing, especially with all the traffic you are seeing.

I'm sorry if my reply sounded a bit rough, it wasn't meant to be.

I'm all for debate that is based in logic and not "tubs of lard and greasy cheeseburgers", lol.

I also agree that having good conversational debates on the blog is important for new readers who may be new to the issue. Long comments and replies can offer reams of information in condensed form :)
